On Monday, April 12, from 3:30  - 4:30 pm, we will have a zoom talk about water in German history. This talk is hosted by the Global Water Initiative and the Center for German Studies. David Blackbourn is a distinguished historian (first at Harvard, now at Vanderbilt) and not easy to “catch.” The title of his talk is:

Time is a Violent Torrent": Writing the River History of Modern Germany.

David Blackbourn’s talk draws on his prize-winning book, The Conquest of Nature: Water and the Making of Modern Germany. He examines the physical transformation of German rivers since the eighteenth century and the cultural meanings that have been projected onto them.

Christian McMillen (Dept. of History, and Associate Dean, UVA) will give the introduction.
